Neutral Bay is a harbourside suburb located 1.5 kilometres north of Sydney`s central business district, on the Lower North Shore and east adjacent to North Sydney. The suburb is largely residential, but also features a thriving commercial strip on Military Road and enjoys a small harbour foreshore on its namesake bay to the south.
In Sydney`s early colonial period, the harbour`s bays were zoned for different incoming ships. In 1789, shortly following the arrival of the First Fleet, the bay on which the present-day suburb sits, was declared a "neutral harbour" where foreign vessels could anchor and take on supplies and fresh water. Neutral Bay was strategically far enough away from Sydney Cove to keep potential enemy ships at a distance, and to also discourage convicts from escaping as stowaways on foreign vessels. By the early 20th century, Neutral Bay had developed into a residential area, with the Arts and Crafts style of architecture being particularly fashionable at the time.
Hayes Street Beach is found on the suburb`s eastern harbour foreshore, adjacent to Neutral Bay`s ferry wharf, while Neutral Bay Marina and Anderson Park are located on the suburb`s western waterfront. Forsyth Park, on Montpelier Street, is Neutral Bay`s second significant green space, and the suburb features a thriving commercial strip based on Military Road in the north.
