Georges Heights is a small residential and recreational urban locality in the suburb of Mosman, found eight kilometres northeast of Sydney's central business district, on the Lower North Shore. The locality is home to a handful of residential streets, a stunning pocket of harbourside national park (adjacent to Clifton Gardens), as well as the Georges Head Military Fortifications.
Georges Heights is named after King George III, who was the reigning sovereign when the First Fleet arrived in Australia in 1788. The area has been a part of the suburb of Mosman since 1997, but Mosman Council allows residents to continue to use the locality's original name in lieu of Mosman if they so wish. The Georges Head Battery, also known as the Georges Head Military Fortifications, were built in 1801 and remodelled and developed up until 1873. The battery forms one of three forts built in the greater area to defend Sydney Harbour from belligerents. The site is now heritage-listed and non-operational.
Georges Head Battery and Georges Head Lookout are found in the locality's southeastern pocket, and enjoy sweeping views over Sydney Harbour towards the Eastern Suburbs and Manly. National parkland encases much of the area's harbour foreshore, and is a popular destination for bushwalking and waterside picnics. The section of Chowder Bay Road adjacent to Clifton Gardens features a small selection of unique harbourside restaurants and events spaces, as well as the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.
